Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images via ABCCancelling the rest of his Purpose tour appears to have been the right move for Justin Bieber. A source tells People that since taking the time off, the singer is doing “much better.”

“It was a really bad scene,” the source says. “He was just not himself. He was profoundly unhappy. Exhausted, low energy. He was just miserable. He needed to step back, recalibrate, and then figure out his next move.”

The source adds that Justin is making progress towards becoming his old self again after being a very dark place.

“He seems happier, more energetic,” the insider says. “It’s encouraging. He’s not completely there, but he’s definitely on his way.”

Part of that recovery has involved Justin getting more in touch with his spirituality and attending church.

“He sees that his life is beautiful, that he’s beautiful,” the source says. “He’s young and rich, but that’s not enough. He’s now becoming emotionally and spiritually grounded, and the difference is written all over his face. It’s beautiful to watch.”
