E Street Band's Jake Clemons helps domestic-violence victims with new project

Credit: Lisa MacIntoshE Street Band saxophonist Jake Clemons has created a new online resource called the Janine Project in support of people affected by domestic violence.

In conjunction with the launch of the initiative, Clemons has released an official video for his new solo song “Janine,” which tells the story of a woman struggling to leave an abusive relationship.  As the clip starts, a message flashes on the screen that reads, “In the time it takes to watch this video, 42 women in North America will have been affected by domestic violence.”

The clip mixes footage of Clemons lip-syncing the song with scenes showing an actress portraying the Janine character, whose partner has battered her face and bruised her arm, as she tries to find the courage to leave him. The video ends with the message, “Break the cycle of violence. Get out while you can.”

JanineProject.com offers general information about shelters around the world, as well as details on how abuse victims can seek help for their situations.

“The video for ‘Janine’ and the Janine Project were created to encourage a conversation that will hopefully lead victims to a safe place of survivorship and abusers to seek help as well & stop hurting others,” Clemons says in a statement. “Fear is not a place where love can grow. If you’re in a relationship ruled by fear, get out while you can, this isn’t Love!”

“Janine” is featured on Clemons’ debut solo album, Fear & Love, which was released in January. Jake has a handful of performances lined up in support of the album, and plans to make information about the Janine Project available at the shows.
