Columbus Police Warns Residents Of Increased Phone Scams

COLUMBUS- The Columbus Police Departments is warning area residents of phone scams that are on the rise.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be the IRS and they demand money for back taxes, the department says to hang up immediately. Last year the callers often left a voicemail with a phone number for you to callback.

The scammers inform you of an overdue balance and offer to settle the back due taxes for a fraction of the balance, often $2,000.00 or $3,000.00 and instruct you to wire the money or ask for your routing number and account number for your checking account.
