Lawrence Phillips Apparently Ends Own Life in Prison

Former Husker I-back Lawrence Phillips apparently committed suicide in his California prison cell Wednesday.  His death came a day after a judge ruled there was enough evidence to try him in the death of his cellmate.

Phillips was already serving a 31-plus year sentence after being convicted of choking his girlfriend and driving his car into a group of people in 2005.

As a sophomore at NU in 1994, Phillips rushed for over 1,700 yards and 16 touchdowns.  But, he was suspended by coach Tom Osborne for six games of the ’95 season after he assaulted an ex-girlfriend by dragging her down a flight of stairs.  He came back in the Fiesta Bowl win over Florida to score three touchdowns as the Huskers won their second straight national title.

Phillips also played in the NFL for the Rams, Dolphins and 49ers.
