Teen Drivers & Seat Belt Usage Focus of NSP Educational Efforts

(Lincoln, Neb.)- Nearly 52,000 people experienced firsthand the role seat belts play in helping to save lives, as part of an educational safety campaign conducted by the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP).

During the first nine months of 2015, troopers conducted safety programs at more than 245 locations across the state. The educational enforcement paid for thanks in part to grants from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS), was aimed at reducing the potential for serious injury and fatality crashes by focusing on teen drivers and the importance of seat belt usage.

“Statistics show us youthful drivers continue to be involved in a high percentage of rollover crashes in which seat belts are not in use,” said Colonel Bradley Rice, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “This opportunity allows us to get out into our communities to provide hands-on learning experiences and hopefully save lives in the process.”

Statistics from NOHS show in 2014, 67% of Nebraska teen drivers (19 years of age and younger) involved in fatal crashes were not wearing seat belts.  Twenty-six percent of all
single-vehicle rollover crashes involved a teen driver, with 54% of fatal crashes involving young drivers most likely to occur on the weekend (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday).

For the remaining three-months of 2015, the Nebraska State Patrol will continue its efforts to reduce serious injury and fatality crashes through educational efforts focusing on teen drivers and seat belt usage.

From October through December, troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol will provide educational program utilizing the agency’s Rollover Simulators, Seat Belt Convincers and Driving Simulator. The educational programs are made possible thanks in part to a $23,155 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS).
