COLUMBUS, Neb – The Nebraska State Patrol says eight people have been taken to the Columbus Community Hospital after a five-car pileup eight and a half miles south of Columbus.
Sgt. Tim Salmen said a crash caused a chain reaction on Sunday evening on Highway 81. He says a car was stopped and waiting to turn when another vehicle rear-ended it. All of the vehicles involved were traveling south.The injured people were taken to a Columbus hospital by Rising City, Shelby & Bellwood Fire Departments. Salmen says their injuries weren’t life threatening.
He says one of the vehicles caught fire after the accident but it was quickly extinguished. Highway 81 remained closed for roughly three and a half hours following the wreck for accident reconstruction and cleanup.
The accident is under investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol, Polk & Butler County Sheriff’s Departments.
